Gracious Space was designed by the Center of Ethical Leadership to “set a tone for honest and rigorous exchange.” By using Gracious Space you can develop and strengthen relationships, team and larger systems level groups. This model has been used for over 10 years by Eastside Pathways, Leadership Eastside, and many other partners in our work.
Eastside Pathways Partnership and Backbone uses many of the Gracious Space elements in its convening culture to build relationship, create a setting conducive for collaboration and to handle the heat that comes from adaptive work. While we most often refer to Gracious Space as the check-in question at the beginning of each meeting it is so much more.
Gracious Space includes:
- A spirit of compassion and curiosity
- A setting that is expressed externally
- A commitment to invite the stranger
- A commitment to learn in public
- A container for working with conflict
- A tool to promote the common good
