Scale & Sustain

Noticias | Equity in Communications (EiC)

Outcome Area: K – 12

Strategy Origin:

EiC grew out of the COVID-19 Collaborative Action Network. It was originally named the Remote Living and Learning group. Families, served by the group’s member organizations, were feeling overwhelmed by the communication from the two school districts, and this was exacerbated during the pandemic. After a focus group to gather community input, EiC started by producing bi-monthly Spanish language video newsletterspublished on Facebook, and later weekly videos.  Even when the pandemic ended, parents valued the support of having a Spanish language option to receive school information.

What is the Strategy?

Trans-creation strategy to empower families by enabling access to information in culturally conscious ways and support in navigating the education system for the thrival of children and youth from K – 12. Transcreation goes beyond machine translation and is a model to put information in a cultural context that allows parents and caregivers to participate in their student’s educational journey.

What does this Strategy aim to improve?

EiC’s success is due to the native Spanish speakers presenting the information in culturally conscious and equitable ways so parents can understand the information and support their children accordingly.
