School Readiness

Supports Bellevue families to ensure the healthy development of all children, so they are ready to succeed in kindergarten.

We are focusing on expanding family and early learning opportunities in currently underserved communities, increase family engagement opportunities and collaborate with the Bellevue School District (BSD), so they are ready to welcome all students and families.

 

Data from WAKids shows significant gaps in Latino School Readiness in five of six domains measured.

We are in the midst of a Latino Early Learning Listening Tour and are leveraging and expanding our partner relationships. We have engaged facilitators of various Latino parent groups and are aiming to reach approximately 50 families. In May/June BSD will be hosting a Spanish Language Kindergarten Readiness event. The information gathered from the listening tour will inform the event. The information will also inform future events and programming of the collaborative and our partners.

 

We are also working with the Data Council team to identify priorities and better understand the current data, specifically where the gaps are. Looking forward we hope in the future to be able to track a child in BSD preschool through third grade, so we better understand the longitudinal impact of preschool. One example is that data tells us that math is an area that needs improvement. Our future efforts could focus on math skills.

Audience Questions

Are there other languages/communities that are supported other than Spanish?

We are working toward outreach to other communities.  At this time the Bellevue School District translates some material into other language but this is the first year they will try the Kindergarten Readiness events all in Spanish. We will chart a path to outreach to other communities, after we evaluate that effort.

Is all data collected (around school readiness) focused on academics or is there data collected on social emotional development?

One of the six domains of WaKids and TS Gold assessments is Social Emotional Learning.

What are other groups of students not doing as well on WAKids?

Other groups of kids not doing well on WaKids are Special Needs and Low Income.

Are you looking into supporting students with learning disorders, ADHD, autism, SPD, etc.?

A work group of the collaborative is working on an Early Developmental Screening grant from Best Starts for Kids. Catching learning disabilities early has been an important part of the school readiness discussions.
