Positive Pathways – Pizza with a Purpose

Pizza with a Purpose (pilot program)

Collaborative: Career Pathways

Period: Nov 2017 – May 2018

Helped students of color connect with professionals of color

“The kids were very curious. They wanted to know about my job – what did I do? What were my responsibilities? What did I study in school and college?”
– A professional from Microsoft
The Focus

The collaborative has been engaging with students of color, in particular students from Interlake. Based on feedback from a survey with students from Black Students Union and Latinos Unidos at Interlake High School, it was decided to create an opportunity for students of color to engage with professionals of color.

  • Authentically engage Black and Hispanic students at Interlake High School with professionals of colors.
  • Give them the opportunity to engage with and have a discussion around career options and opportunities.
The Activity
  • The first Pizza with a Purpose was held on November 29, 2017, with 26 students and 14 professionals.
  • Two more meetings were held, in March and May of 2018.
The Impact

Students

  • Very positive feedback.
  • The informal setting, in small groups, encouraged students to ask questions and engage in meaningful conversations with the professionals about their career and life paths.
  • Many students would stay back to continue chatting with the professionals.

Professionals

  • Felt that students were curious and genuinely engaged and interested in what they had to say.
  • They felt such programs are necessary.
The Learnings
  • It is important to have students involved in programs and understand their needs.
  • The students suggested that it would be good to have more time for longer conversations.
  • Helping students to be more informed, helps them make better career choices.
